Fisheries Updates

Many organizations monitor juvenile and adult salmonids and other aquatic species to assess the health, abundance, timing, and success of populations in the Klamath Basin. This information is critical to properly managing fish populations and allows for the understanding of habitat use, success of restoration projects, and where possible, helps ensure sufficient flows are released to maintain listed species. Through the efforts of many agencies, tribes, landowners, and private partners, updates are regularly provided to convey the latest information from crews working across the basin.

Mainstem Klamath River
- Trap Locations- The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) operates three downstream migrant traps on the Klamath River:
  - Klamath River below Iron Gate Dam (Bogus Trap Site) at rkm 307.75
  - Klamath River near Interstate 5 (I-5 Trap Site) at rkm 293.55
  - Klamath River above Kinsman Creek (Kinsman Trap Site) at rkm 237.55

- Objectives- The outmigration of juvenile salmonids is monitored annually on the mainstem Klamath River by the USFWS Arcata Fish and Wildlife Office (AFWO) and the Karuk Tribe of California. The objectives of this collaborative project are to:
  - Estimate the weekly abundance of juvenile Chinook Salmon and collect pertinent biological data such as fork lengths and presence of clinical signs of disease at three selected locations on the mainstem Klamath River.
  - Collect, preserve, and deliver weekly-stratified, random samples of young-of-the-year (YOY) Chinook Salmon to the Service’s California–Nevada Fish Health Center (CA–NV FHC) for conducting qPCR assays to estimate infection rates in the outmigrant population.
  - Collect relative abundance and biological data on Coho Salmon and Steelhead at the three locations on the mainstem Klamath River.
Shasta and Scott Rivers
- Trap Locations- The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) operates downstream migrant traps on the Shasta River near the mouth at rkm 0.7 and on the Scott River at rkm 7.6.

- Objectives- The specific goals of the 2015 out migration monitoring were:
  - To determine emigration abundance and timing of all age classes of juvenile salmonids in the Shasta and Scott Rivers between late January and early July 2015.
  - To estimate the weekly mean fork lengths and ages of salmonids in the catch from a measured sub-sample.
  - To estimate weekly rotary trap efficiencies for all age classes of Chinook, coho, and steelhead in the catch and produce weekly production estimates for each age class.
  - To monitor stream flow and temperature at the traps.
